User experience: the Record Herald lathe — a compact premium-class wood lathe

User experience: the Record Herald lathe — a compact premium-class wood lathe

We asked Oskari Väre of A&O Design what he thinks of the Herald lathe he bought, after testing it for a few months

In my view this lathe is a sound choice if you intend to turn even a little more than occasionally. You get value for your money here for a long time. Both small and larger work succeed on it, steadily and accurately. The lathe has several features you normally only meet in the next size class up.

“The lathe has several features you normally only meet in a lathe one size class up”

The electronically variable speed is definitely one of the lathe's best features. It saves the endless moving of the belt to change speed. If you do need different torque ranges, there are three belt positions, and the change is quick.

The headstock swivels to several positions, which gives more scope for finding the right turning stance and for turning large platters, for instance. The direction of spindle rotation changes at the press of a button, which helps with sanding. The spindle lock holds the spindle in 24 positions, which again opens possibilities for decorating the work.

The lathe's frame is solid cast iron, and the optional legs can be filled with sand, for example, so the lathe stands even more firmly. The bed can be extended with extension pieces, which are also proper cast iron and accurately machined. One extension piece alone takes the distance between centres to around 1,000 millimetres.

Generally speaking, all the lathe's parts are accurately machined and of even quality. One person can assemble it in a couple of hours. During assembly I would recommend wiping the factory protective grease off every surface and then oiling the surfaces that need it. The factory grease is thick enough that all the dust and dirt sticks firmly to it.

This lathe gets a strong recommendation and a big thank you from me.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Herald's best feature?

The electronically variable speed. It saves the endless moving of the belt, and there are still three belt positions for different torque ranges.

What does the swivelling headstock make possible?

A headstock that swivels to several positions helps you find the right turning stance and makes it possible to turn large platters, for example.

How long a distance between centres can be reached?

Around 1,000 millimetres with one extension piece alone. The extension pieces are cast iron and accurately machined.

How long does assembly take?

About a couple of hours for one person.

What should be done straight after assembly?

Wipe the factory protective grease off every surface and oil the surfaces that need it. The factory grease is thick enough that dust and dirt stick to it.
