Record turning tools are made in Sheffield, England

Making good turning tools is the result of years of development

The design took several years. Turning tools are the newest product group made in our own factory in England. Although we have many years' experience of making turning tools on Meadow Street in Sheffield, from well before 2003, the new range was designed over many years before it was launched. A turning tool may look like a very simple implement, but there is a great deal to consider in making one.

First we analysed where the older range could be improved

We began by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of our original Sheffield-made tool range, which is how we found the areas to improve.

Next we analysed our competitors' strengths and weaknesses

We then compared the old tools with other brands' English-made tools and tested the competitors' strengths and weaknesses. On the basis of those comparisons we made a series of prototypes, which we sent around the world for assessment by professional turners, experienced enthusiasts and retailers specialising in woodturning.

The result: optimised tool profiles and handle sizes

After several months of testing we finally arrived at the right sizes, tool profiles and handle shape. We wanted full-size, professional-grade tools that even a first-timer can use easily and safely. Our tools have a generously sized beech handle, sturdy enough for heavy work, comfortable to hold and easy to steer. The gouges have been refined to give the best possible chip clearance and efficient cutting. Every profile is ground for general use, suits turners of every level and is easy to re-grind. Whatever the quality and potential of a turning tool, it only works well when correctly sharpened — and that is the hardest part of woodturning for many.

The reasoning behind our choices

Our tools have features and sizes fully suited to professional use, and we use the same steel and heat treatment as most of our English competitors — but our profiles are easy to sharpen and to use straight out of the box. We made clear instructional videos on using the tools, and you can maintain the profiles freehand and inexpensively on a bench grinder. Experienced turners usually grind their own proven profiles into their tools in any case, but with our tools a beginner has no need to.

Six-piece sets usually include a skew chisel but not two different parting tools, and the skew is indeed a versatile and important tool. It is, however, a very difficult tool to use, and many beginners get frustrated learning it. We chose two different parting tools for our sets, because they can be used for different purposes both in spindle turning and in bowl turning. Parting tools are also easy to sharpen. Our turning tool sets are designed for the beginning turner and contain easy-to-use but effective tools. The skew chisel is worth adding to the armoury once the turner is ready for the challenge.
