An oscillating sander is a sander where the sanding drum not only rotates but also moves vertically up and down, or oscillates. This type of sander is particularly good for finishing various shapes, for example, after a band saw or jigsaw.
The Triton TSPS450 is an oscillating sander with a 450 watt motor and a 370 x 295mm cast iron table. The machine has storage space for sanding rollers and drums and the tool needed to change them, as well as insert discs. The machine also has a connection for a 35mm dust extraction hose. The sales package includes five sanding drums (sizes 19, 26, 38, 51 and 76mm) and six sanding rollers (sizes 13, 19, 26, 38, 51 and 76mm, grit P80), which are 115mm high. The inserts corresponding to each sanding roller are also included, which are used to minimize the gap around the drum. In addition, sanding rollers with grits P60, P80, P150 and P240 are available for the machine.

We tested the machine by sanding a simple shape on a spruce plywood using a 38mm drum with the included P80 sanding roller. Precise sanding was easy, and more aggressive material removal was possible if necessary. The best and perhaps even most surprising aspect of the Triton sander was the dust extraction. When used with the Festool CTL Midi vacuum cleaner, there was practically no dust on the table or on the workpiece. This keeps the workspace naturally tidy, but the effective dust extraction also makes sanding easier as the dust stays off the workpiece.

Another use for an oscillating sander is to size a piece to the correct thickness. This is done by clamping a piece onto the sander table as a stop and feeding the piece to be processed between the stop and the sanding roller. In this type of machining, the size of the piece to be processed is limited by the height of the sanding roller and the size of the sanding table, but as you can see in the video below, it is a very effective way to thickness sand smaller pieces. The video also shows the Triton's excellent chip removal.
