When working with laminated wood or rough planks, a belt sander is an effective tool in the workshop. It removes material quickly. It smooths even large surfaces quickly. However, the actual performance of the machine depends entirely on the quality and type of sanding belt. A poor quality or incorrectly selected belt can make even a good machine ineffective and frustrating to use.

When using a belt sander, most of the problems are related to the quality of the consumables. Cheap and low-quality belts often cause two significant problems: the seams break and the belt quickly clogs. If the seam breaks during work, the sanding is interrupted and, in the worst case, the machine frame or guide rollers are damaged.
Another common problem is clogging. When wood dust and resin build up on the surface of the belt, the abrasive grains no longer grip the wood. The belt then starts to slide on the surface instead of sanding. The resulting friction quickly raises the temperature.
The heat generated by a clogged sanding belt damages both the material and the accessories. The heat melts the belt's binders, causing the abrasive grains to come off prematurely. In addition, the heat can burn black marks onto the surface of the wood, which are difficult to remove later. By choosing a high-quality and correctly sized belt, you ensure that the work is smooth and that you do not have to press the machine unnecessarily hard.
Before purchasing a tape, you need to find out the tape size required by the machine. The most common hand-held devices use standard sizes, the most popular of which are 75x533 mm and 100x610 mm tapes. Installing the wrong size tape will not work: a tape that is too short will not fit on the rollers, and a tape that is too long will slip or come off immediately when you start it. Check the exact millimeter dimensions in the machine's operating instructions or on the back of the old tape.
In addition to size, the choice of grit is also crucial. In woodworking, progressing step by step ensures a smooth finish without visible scratches. A common mistake is to jump over too many grit grades at once, for example from a coarse P60 belt straight to a fine P120 belt. This leaves deep scratches on the surface that the fine belt will no longer remove effectively. Unfortunately, scratches often only become visible when varnish, wax or oil is applied to the surface.

DISCOVER THE SANDING BELT RANGEInstalling a sanding belt is a quick and routine procedure, but being careful will save supplies and your machine. Before you thread a new belt onto the reel, check its joint type. There are two main jointing techniques used in belts: butt joint (butt joint) and lap joint. In a butt joint, the ends of the belt are placed opposite each other and joined on the back with a thin, tensile-resistant film. This type of belt has a uniform thickness and can be rotated in the machine in either direction.
In a lap joint, or lap joint, the ends of the belt are ground to bevels and glued together. This model always has a specific direction of rotation. If you install a belt with a lap joint in the machine the wrong way around, the edge of the workpiece will constantly hit the joint against the direction of rotation. Mechanical stress will quickly tear the seam open, and in the worst case, the broken belt can get stuck between the frame and damage the guide rollers or the drive mechanism. Ensuring the correct direction is easy: always check the arrow printed on the back of the belt and install it so that it points in the same direction as the direction of rotation indicator found on the machine frame.
Once the belt is in place, adjust its tracking . If the belt does not run in a straight line on the rollers, it will start to wander against the inner frame of the machine or slip out of place completely. The belt tracking is adjusted using the adjustment screw on the front of the machine while the machine is idling. Turn the screw a little at a time and observe the movement of the belt until it rotates in the middle of the rollers. It is also worth monitoring the adjustment while working, as applying strong pressure can shift the belt alignment.
A question that often arises in workshops is whether a belt sander intended for sanding wood can also be used for cleaning metal parts, removing rust, or sharpening tools. The answer is technically yes, but in practice this involves a serious occupational safety risk.
The greatest danger is related to the risk of fire. In woodworking, fine and flammable wood dust always accumulates in the internal parts of the machine, between the rollers and in the dust extraction. When sanding metal with the machine, the hot sparks generated during the machining fly directly into the dust. The air flow from the vacuum cleaner acts as a bellows, which can fan a smoldering spark into an open fire in an instant. If metal must be sanded with the same machine, the device and dust extraction must be cleaned completely free of wood dust by vacuuming and using compressed air, and the suction hoses must be disconnected during sanding.
In addition to safety factors, the technical differences in the materials are a challenge. Sanding belts intended for wood sanding are usually coated with aluminum oxide. This is well suited for wood, but when sanding metal, the aluminum oxide grains quickly become dull and crumble. Metalworking requires harder, self-sharpening abrasive grains, such as zirconium oxide or ceramic materials. These can withstand the heat generated by metal sanding without melting the belt's binders or prematurely loosening the abrasive grains.
Although both machines are used for sanding wooden surfaces, their operating principle, power and sanding result differ significantly. The belt sander operates on a continuous linear motion rotating in one direction. Since the belt always moves in the same direction at a constant and high speed, it removes material efficiently. It is ideal for basic work, such as straightening the seams of glued panels, removing thick layers of material or straightening a crooked plank in the direction of the grain.
The random orbital sander, on the other hand, operates with a circular sanding wheel that simultaneously rotates and makes a small, irregular eccentric motion. The random orbital motion prevents the abrasive grains from traveling the same path twice. As a result, the random orbital sander removes material more slowly, but leaves behind a scratch-free, even surface without visible sanding patterns. It is the best tool for final finishing before varnishing, waxing or oiling.
