When removing old and thick coatings, a common mistake is to use fine-grained sandpaper. When removing paint and varnish, two factors are crucial: a sufficiently coarse grain size and an open coat. These factors ensure that the loose material has enough space to move before the belt becomes clogged.
In open-sanding, the abrasive grains are bonded to the backing material less frequently than in belts intended for finer finishing. When there are fewer grains on the surface, there is significantly more empty space between them. Thanks to the sparse spreading, varnish dust and paint particles are removed from the sanding area without being packed between the grains. On the other hand, dense, closed spreading quickly clogs due to the lack of escape routes.
The choice of sanding belt material also plays a big role. The typical reddish-brown aluminum oxide belt is excellent for basic sanding of wood, but zirconium or ceramic belts are much more effective for paint removal. These materials can withstand higher temperatures and stay sharp for a long time, which reduces friction. The cooler working temperature effectively prevents paint from melting.

However, there is no need to throw the belt away immediately, as there is a simple and effective tool to help: a sandpaper cleaning piece, or cleaning rubber. This piece, made of natural rubber, works in practice like a large eraser, mechanically removing stuck material.
When paint begins to build up on the surface of the belt and the cutting performance decreases, use the cleaning pad. Start the machine and hold it firmly in place. Press the cleaning pad against the rotating sanding belt briefly and firmly. The friction causes the rubber to bite into the gaps between the grains, pulling the stuck paint with it and cleaning the belt in a few seconds. This saves a lot of consumables by extending the service life of the sanding belt.
To achieve a successful result, it is worth observing the behavior of the machine during the work. When the sanding belt is clean, the working sound is evenly rough and biting. As soon as the belt starts to fill with paint, the sound changes to a quieter hiss. You will also notice that the machine starts to slide on the surface and does not remove material as effectively.
If you continue sanding at this stage, instead of fine wood dust, dark, burnt marks will start to appear in the working area and a pungent smell of burnt paint will rise into the air. By reacting to the symptoms in time and cleaning the belt immediately, you will save the wood surface from damage and ensure a smooth workflow.
