A versatile and modular CNC machine for educational use

We delivered a CNC machine with a 1,200 × 1,200 mm capacity to the University of Lapland's teacher training school in Rovaniemi. The machine is fitted with school equipment and a vacuum table. The large working area makes it possible to fit a tool changer and a rotary axis later. By reducing the external dimensions of the machine we designed, we were able to fit a unit offering versatile possibilities into a limited space.

A challenging site to deliver to

The site lay behind several small doors, so the machine had to be assembled in place. The space was also limited, which set demands on the design, and the machine's protective enclosure was made to measure.

Polar Bear – a Finnish CNC machine range

The experience gathered over the years from selling and delivering CNC machines to schools and colleges has strengthened our knowledge of CNC machines, their features and their use. The production and delivery difficulties brought on by the corona pandemic made it hard to obtain and deliver goods of every kind. In the middle of that uncertainty, the idea came to us of bringing CNC machine production and development closer to our customers, that is to Finland.

Once we had strengthened our team with a product design engineer who had maintained and developed industrial welding robots and automation systems, and with a product developer with a machining background, we began designing and developing our own CNC machine range in spring 2019.

Starting points: function, availability, serviceability and a reasonable price

The price structure of the range had to stay reasonable. The intention was not to develop an all-inclusive solution for industrial needs, but a machine range in which even the largest machine would be within reach of an ordinary user interested in CNC. The machine had to be easy to service, and spare part availability was secured as far as possible by using standard parts and Finnish subcontractors. As the manufacturer we can of course offer expert product support from the very first contact. The control board chosen was the dependable European UCCNC, which has been used in other European CNC machines since 2011.

Two ranges

At present we offer two ranges: EDU and PRO. The EDU range is, as the name says, aimed particularly at educational institutions, but it also suits enthusiasts and professional use where production does not demand higher speeds. The PRO range is heavier, offering more capacity and up to 235 mm of Z-axis travel.
