Technical data

FitsM964
Functionopens and closes the air flow, regulates the vacuum

What the regulation gives you

The M964 connects to compressed air, and without a valve the suction is on whenever the line is connected. The valve adds two things: clamping and releasing in one movement, and the ability to regulate the vacuum rather than having it always at full.

How vacuum clamping works

A vacuum clamp does not really ”suck” the workpiece down. Air is removed from under the cup, and the clamping is done by the surrounding atmospheric pressure pressing the workpiece against the cup. Holding power therefore depends on two things: how large the sealed area is, and how well the workpiece blocks air from returning under the cup.

The seal decides

This is the single most important factor in vacuum clamping. If the workpiece passes air, or lets it in under the seal, the vacuum breaks down and the stated holding power is not reached — the fault may not be visible anywhere, the grip is simply weak.

  • Holds well: coated chipboard and MDF, melamine, laminate, plywood on the smooth face, glass, metal, stone and planed solid timber.
  • Holds poorly: rough sawn faces, unsanded surfaces, uncoated board on the edge, porous softwoods.
  • Does not hold: perforated board, mesh, fabric and porous insulation.

Cleanliness is part of the seal too: a speck of dust under the seal is a leak path. Wipe both the cup and the clamping surface before work, and test the grip before trusting it.

Venturi or vacuum pump

Vacuum can be generated in two ways, and the physics of the clamping is the same in both. A Venturi generator — as in this clamp — makes vacuum from compressed air: the air is accelerated through a restriction, the pressure drops and draws the air out from under the cup. It needs a compressor but has no moving parts and no maintenance. A vacuum pump makes vacuum electrically, uses less energy in continuous duty and works without an air line — but it is a more expensive device that needs servicing. In a shop that already has compressed air, the Venturi is in practice always the simpler answer.

INSTALLMENT

A lever valve for controlling the M964 vacuum clamp. The manufacturer recommends it for easier control: the valve opens and closes the flow of air and also allows regulation of the clamp vacuum.
