The M964's rubber seal is removable so the suction area can be matched to the size of the workpiece. That same removability also makes it a replaceable part: changing the seal is enough, the whole clamp does not need renewing.
According to the manufacturer the clamp's holding power depends on the porosity of the material and the cleanliness of the surface — and in addition on the seal itself being sound.
A vacuum clamp does not really ”suck” the workpiece down. Air is removed from under the cup, and the clamping is done by the surrounding atmospheric pressure pressing the workpiece against the cup. Holding power therefore depends on two things: how large the sealed area is, and how well the workpiece blocks air from returning under the cup.
This is the single most important factor in vacuum clamping. If the workpiece passes air, or lets it in under the seal, the vacuum breaks down and the stated holding power is not reached — the fault may not be visible anywhere, the grip is simply weak.
Cleanliness is part of the seal too: a speck of dust under the seal is a leak path. Wipe both the cup and the clamping surface before work, and test the grip before trusting it.
