The idea started here: the seats in our motorhome needed washing. In rental use, pale seats get dirty quickly, and we were about to buy an upholstery cleaner. Looking into it, I realised that the suction of our Festool extractors comfortably exceeded that of the upholstery cleaners I had looked at, and that Festool extractors are very well suited to picking up water. So why not use our CTL Midi to wash the seats? Read how the seats turned out.

The main difference from a proper upholstery cleaner seemed to be the absence of a cleaning-fluid nozzle built into the suction head. Upholstery cleaners often let you spray the fluid straight from a nozzle beside the suction head. The dirt in a car seat is, however, often so ingrained that the detergent needs time to work before the liquid is drawn up. The vacuuming is therefore not necessarily done immediately after spraying, so using a wet extractor is not necessarily any more awkward than using a dedicated upholstery cleaner.
To pick up water with a Festool extractor, the normal filter has to be replaced with the NF-CT wet filter. The dust bag also has to be removed, so the water goes straight into the empty container and you avoid a mess. The container comes off easily and can be washed straight under the tap.
It is worth vacuuming the seat dry first, because a lot of dirt collects in the seams in particular. I then applied the cleaning fluid from a separate spray bottle directly onto the seat. In the spray bottle I made up a solution of detergent and bleach. Everyone should work out what suits them, but the detergent must of course be one that is right for textiles and will not spoil the plastic and metal parts. I consulted the detergent supplier (Swipe) myself and got good advice. I sprayed generously, let the detergent work for about five minutes and vacuumed the liquid away.
It is always sensible to buy a nozzle or cleaning set along with a Festool extractor. I used the Cleaning set compact D27/D36 K-RS-PLUS, a basic set in its own Systainer — packed in a handy plastic case that clips to other Systainers and onto the extractor itself (in the photograph). The small brush nozzle included in the set turned out to be the best for washing car seats, because the seat is uneven enough that the larger nozzles rode too high and the suction was not directed into the fabric. The brush also made it possible to agitate the fabric while vacuuming, which proved very effective.
| Before washing the seat had visible stains and ingrained dirt | After washing the seat looked bright | The extractor's container held an unbelievable amount of dirty water from washing just the two front seats |
With the same effort, the oil and other stains in the car's curtains and other upholstery got cleaned too. That is how straightforward it was: spray the product on the stain, work it with the brush, add a little water to help rinse if needed, and vacuum the liquid up.
If you own a Festool extractor, this is a good moment to wash the stained textiles in your home and your cars. And if you do not own a Festool extractor yet — here is one more good reason to invest in your own.
The NF-CT wet filter in place of the normal filter, and the dust bag has to come out. The water then goes straight into the empty container.
The small brush nozzle. A seat is uneven enough that larger nozzles ride too high and the suction is not directed into the fabric. The brush lets you agitate and vacuum at the same time.
Yes. A lot of dry dirt collects in the seams in particular.
About five minutes here, before the liquid was vacuumed up. Ingrained dirt needs dwell time.
One that suits textiles and will not damage plastic and metal parts. It is worth asking the detergent supplier for advice.
