Proper use of a belt sander requires continuous motion, a light grip, and moving in the direction of the wood grain. A belt sander is a bit like that reliable but slightly loud friend in the workshop: it does the toughest jobs selflessly, as long as you control it with a firm grip. When faced with a large and uneven wooden surface, no other hand tool removes material as effectively. The downside of this enormous power, however, is that in inexperienced hands, the machine can ruin a valuable workpiece in seconds. Deep grooves, rounded corners and unevenness are unfortunately common mistakes that require hours of repair work.

In this guide, we'll walk you through how to get the most out of your belt sander without fear of damaging the surface. We'll cover the right techniques, choosing the right grit, and the most critical pitfalls that separate the work of a hobbyist from that of a professional.

How does a belt sander work and when should you use it?

The working principle of a belt sander is simple: an electric motor rotates two rollers around which a continuous, closed sanding belt is stretched. Because the sanding motion is completely linear and always occurs in one direction, the machine removes material much faster and more aggressively than, for example, random orbit or plane sanders.

This machine is a heavy-duty piece of equipment for the workshop. It is at its best when working on large, flat surfaces and requiring a lot of material removal. Typical applications include:

  • Smoothing the seams of glued laminated timber panels, such as table tops.
  • The first smoothing of rough, sawn timber. For example, when band saws have done the preliminary work, a belt sander is used to quickly smooth the surfaces before finer machining.
  • Removing old paint, varnish or thick layers of glue.

Once the preparations are done, it's time to get to work. The correct technique is based on controlled movement and lightness. Follow these steps carefully:

Step 1: Tape Tracking

Place the sanding belt in place and lift the machine into the air. Turn the machine on briefly and see if the belt stays centered on the rollers. If the belt wanders to either side, adjust the adjustment screw on the front of the machine until the belt rotates evenly in the center. An incorrectly adjusted belt will quickly rub against the machine frame.
