The job of an air cleaner is to circulate the workshop air and trap the airborne fine particles in its filters. Most of the dust then ends up in the filters instead of your lungs.
No air cleaner removes airborne dust completely, but it reduces it radically. An air cleaner also needs a well functioning extraction at source alongside it: an effective dust extractor connected tightly to the woodworking machines is always the most important and most effective way to reduce the hazards of wood dust. When working particularly hazardous species, a respirator is worth wearing as well.
Our partner Wim Pauwels of Taiga Tools Oy sent us before-and-after photographs of the filters in a Record Power air cleaner. As the well-known phrase goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
The filters in the photograph had been in use for about a year, with the air cleaner running on average once or twice a week.
“When wood and wood-based panels are machined, dust is released into the air with a particle size that varies widely depending on, among other things, the machining method, the species and the moisture content of the wood. Most of the mass of wood dust particles is usually concentrated in particles larger than 10 µm, but the dust also contains particles below 5 µm, which reach the furthest parts of the lungs. Nano-sized particles are hardly produced in wood machining at all. In addition to pure wood material, wood dust may contain natural impurities such as bacteria and moulds on the surface of the stem wood, and mould, blue-stain and decay fungi present in sawn timber. Chemical additives may also originate from wood preservatives, adhesives and finishing materials such as paints and lacquers.”

Both air cleaners work on exactly the same principle and both filter down to 1 µm (micrometre). They therefore remove particles larger than one micrometre from the air passing through. Both machines have a remote control, a timer and ceiling mounts. The Laguna Tools A|Flux also has an indicator showing when the filter needs cleaning. Record Power's AC400 is designed for rooms of about 110 m³ and the Laguna Tools A|Flux 12 for about 320 m³.

The dust extractor is extraction at source and the more important of the two: it is connected tightly to the machine where the dust is created. The air cleaner circulates the room air and catches what escaped.
