This article goes through the key features of the Sabre saws. We start with the larger bandsaws, the Sabre 350 and 450, and finish with the Sabre 250.
Fine-tuning the fence perfectly parallel to the blade is easy with the SABRE fence. Inside the fence base is a crank that swings the fence simply by turning a knob, and it locks in place easily once the right position has been found. You no longer need to shim the position of the fence rail to get a perfectly straight cut.

A unique solution allows the fence to be mounted on either side of the blade, which helps when cutting with the table tilted, for instance.

The fence is built for hard use and gives excellent support to heavy timber.

Nylon pads are fitted under both ends of the fence, so it slides smoothly along the whole length of the table and across both fence slots.

The length of the rail means the fence can be placed on either side of the blade without moving the rail. The laser-etched scale will last the life of the machine. The rail is solid steel, so it is genuinely durable and rigid. The bar is also adjustable in every direction, so calibration is possible and easy to carry out.

A pin fitted to the centre of the rip fence helps when ripping long timber. Supported at a single point, long cuts are easier to make because the split timber can open freely behind the blade. The timber can also pivot freely on the pin, so variations in the grain do not make the blade wander. The pin also helps with curved cuts.

The blade guides on every SABRE machine are spring-loaded, work without separate tools and are simple and intuitive to adjust and use. Every machine has side and rear blade guides both above and below the table. All the guides release easily by turning an ergonomic knob; an internal spring pushes the guide away from the blade and gives enough counterforce for accurate, easy and intuitive adjustment. Turning the knob the other way then locks the settings.

On the SABRE saws the guides are attached to an extremely rigid upper guide post, which also serves as a blade guard. The purpose is to allow accurate, perpendicular movement of the upper blade guides. The guides move on a sturdy rack and pinion, which is considerably better than the alternative systems that clamp the guide post directly against the unmachined frame of the machine. On the SABRE the guide post has a sturdy, independent mount with fixing bolts and adjusting screws that guarantee accuracy in every situation.

Although we always advise “measure twice, cut once”, the blade guards on the SABRE-350 and SABRE-450 include a scale to help judge the cutting height. It is a useful and quick reference for setting the guides to roughly the height needed, before the final measurements and adjustments are made.

The new and improved blade tensioning works on the same principle as the quick-release mechanisms on industrial bandsaws: turning the crank releases the blade, so the blade can be changed quickly and tensioned back to the same setting as before. That makes changing a blade easy and fast. Fine adjustments are made with the crank on top of the wheel housing.

If you know your blade is in good condition, a wandering blade is most likely slack. On the SABRE-350 and SABRE-450 the tensioning system is built for heavy work and designed to give more than enough force for a blade of any width compatible with the machine.

To ensure the flatness of the table and to minimise friction, these accurate tables feature standard 19 / 24 mm T-slots, compatible with most fences and accessories. Holes are pre-drilled at the rear and sides of the tables for extension tables and your own jigs.

The large, heavily built cast iron tilt mechanism gives steady support and accuracy to the cast iron tables. The fixing points are machined to improve accuracy. Operation is easy thanks to a geared mechanism and a crank.

Levelling screws are built into the table inserts so the insert can be levelled accurately, or set just below the table surface if that is what the job needs. That leaves the workpiece an unobstructed path.

The pin ensures that both halves of the table are level at the blade-change slot. The system is not only accurate but also allows a genuinely quick blade change — far handier than lock systems that need tools.

Dynamically balanced, heavy wheels create a flywheel effect in use, which adds to the machine's power and efficiency. It also reduces the load on the motor and so extends its life.

Most bandsaws have only simple, flat wheels, which can lead to wear and do not make tracking the blade any easier. A crown on the wheel or tyre helps the blade run naturally in the middle of the tyre and lifts the blade so that contact between the teeth and the wheels is minimised. On the SABRE-350 and SABRE-450 this shape is machined accurately into the wheel itself, so the profile does not wear away in use and is always the same.

The inspection window lets you see the blade from the side of the wheel — making adjustment far easier than trying to watch from the front of the machine.

The stand has handy storage space for tools, timber and manuals.
The strength of the construction, the added rigidity and the dynamically balanced wheels allow the SABRE-350 and SABRE-450 a speed of 1,000 metres per minute, around 20 per cent faster than other machines in the same size class. That allows faster cutting and a better finish, particularly with the coarse blades used for cutting thick material, because of the efficient chip clearance.

As development of the SABRE-350 and SABRE-450 continued, we decided to take some of the best features of these entirely new machines and add them to the BS250, to make the market-leading small bandsaw with the best features and performance unmatched in this price class. As a result, we believe we have succeeded in creating the best bench-top bandsaw in this price bracket.
We also believe the upgrades in capacity, power and performance, together with the unique SABRE features, make this machine a genuine alternative to general-purpose floor-standing bandsaws when the optional table and wheel kit BS250-AW is fitted beneath it. In that package the machine has quality and features considerably ahead of many other cheaper floor-standing bandsaws on the market.
The result is a high-quality, affordable bandsaw that has kept the small footprint of the BS250 but has been upgraded with considerable improvements in capacity, usability, accuracy and performance.

Improved, heavier wheels give the bandsaw smooth and powerful performance.

A unique fence mounting mechanism allows the fence to be fitted to the right-hand side of the blade. An excellent feature when working with the table tilted, for example.

The fence screws are easy to reach. That makes fine-tuning the fence for greater accuracy simple.

When the fence is not in use it can be parked on the side of the machine.

This feature is usually found only on the largest machines. The powerful tensioning system has a lock that is released and tightened with a crank, which makes blade changes easy and fast.

The spring-loaded blade guides are quick and easy to adjust without tools.

The sturdy, accurately ground cast iron table gives good, friction-free support to the material being worked.

Side hinges make opening the door and changing the blade easy, even with the machine set right against a wall.
The faster speed (1,000 m/min) is excellent for general cutting. The slower speed is intended for hard and delicate timber, reducing the risk of burning.

It guides the blade to run naturally in the middle of the tyre and lifts the blade so that contact between the teeth and the wheel is minimised. On the Sabre 350 and 450 the shape is machined directly into the wheel, so it does not wear away.
If the blade is in good condition, the cause is most likely insufficient tension. The tensioning system on the Sabre machines is sized to give adequate force for every compatible blade width.
It supports long timber at a single point, so the split stock can open freely behind the blade and the piece can pivot as the grain varies. It also helps with curved cuts.
Yes. With the optional BS250-AW table and wheel kit the machine becomes a floor-standing model.
